Error: Incorrect DOS version (due to an older version of DOS used on backup).
Error:
Incorrect DOS version.
Cause:
The backup was made on a previous version of MS-DOS or on a different version of Windows, one which Windows 95 does not recognize.
Solution:
Enable a multiple boot to the previous MS-DOS version. Remove the attributes from Msdos.sys, and edit the file to add BootMulti=1. Press F4 when starting the computer, to access the previous MS-DOS version.
NOTE: The following procedure works only if the previous MS-DOS version still exists on the drive. In some cases, previous MS-DOS files have been removed prior to setup.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders...'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box appears.)
3) Select the root directory to search from the 'Look in' drop-down list box.
EXAMPLE: C:
4) Type MSDOS.SYS in the 'Named' box.

5) Click 'Find Now'. (The dialog box expands and the results of the search appear at the bottom of the dialog box.)
6) Right-click the file named Msdos.sys in the find results window. (A pop-up menu appears.)
7) Copy Msdos.sys to a diskette to create a backup:
a) Select 'Send To' from the pop-up menu.
b) Select '3-1/2 Floppy A' or the drive that is listed for the floppy drive.

8) Right-click the Msdos.sys file.
9) Select 'Properties'. (The 'MSDOS.SYS Properties' dialog box appears.)

10) Clear the 'Read-only', 'Hidden', and 'Archive' check boxes.
NOTE: This removes the Msdos.sys default attributes and enables the file to be edited.

11) Click 'Apply'.
12) Click 'OK'.
13) Select the Msdos.sys file from the find results window.
NOTE: The find results window may contain multiple files named MSDOS. The correct file is named Msdos.sys, a system file.
14) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open with...'. (The 'Open With' dialog box appears.)
15) Select 'WordPad' from the 'Choose the program you want to use' list box, and click 'OK'. (The Msdos.sys file opens in WordPad.)

16) Type the following in the 'Options' group:

17) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'.
18) Click 'Text Only'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
19) Click 'Save' and answer 'Yes' to replace the existing file.
20) Click the 'Start' button, select 'Shut Down...', and select the 'Restart the computer' radio button.
21) Click 'Yes'.
22) When the computer starts again, press F4. (A prompt stating that the previous version of MS-DOS is being loaded appears.)
